New city terminal strengthens Macau–Hong Kong air links

Macau’s MGM Cotai is set to open a city terminal for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 4 February 2026, marking another milestone in cross-border aviation collaboration across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area.

According to local media reports, MGM China confirmed that the facility will be officially named the “City Terminal for Hong Kong International Airport.” The project is a joint partnership between HKIA, Zhuhai Airport, MGM, and China Travel Tours Transportation Services Hong Kong Limited.

First-of-its-kind facility in Macau

MGM emphasised that this will be the first off-airport and overseas check-in terminal jointly developed with HKIA and Zhuhai Airport in Macau. The initiative underscores growing integration between the aviation and transportation networks of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau.

City terminals enable passengers to complete their check-in, baggage drop, and immigration procedures outside the airport, making travel more efficient and minimising border-related delays.

At Macau International Airport (MIA), innovations like mobile check-ins, biometric verification, and smart luggage tracking are already in place—features that may soon be integrated into the city terminals’ next wave of digital upgrades. This seamless travel reduces stress for travellers, especially for business visitors and high-spending tourists.

The MGM Cotai terminal will also feature SkyLimo services, offering premium, direct transfers to HKIA’s restricted area.

In Hong Kong, at least six dedicated HKIA city terminals have been established with plans to further expand the broader Greater Bay Area network. For one, in-town luggage check-in at the airport is available at Kowloon Station and Hong Kong Station. By sea, Hong Kong offers two cruise terminals and three primary cross-boundary ferry terminals for travelling to Macau and mainland China.

Expanding Macau’s aviation services

The new terminal builds on Macau’s recent efforts to enhance airport services. In 2024, three service-related companies were launched: the Hong Kong Macau Airport Passenger Services Limited, the Hong Kong International Airport (China) Limited, and the Zhuhai International Airport Management Limited.

Additionally, Hong Kong and Zhuhai airports jointly opened the “Dual Cities” airport lounge at The Venetian Resort’s east entrance, further strengthening regional connectivity.

Integrated transport network

Macau continues to upgrade its air and ground transport systems to attract more international visitors. The city has already recorded a strong rebound in tourism in 2025 as international arrivals grew to 13.7 percent year-on-year to about 2.76 million, according to the Macau Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Beyond aviation, the city operates two major ferry terminals linking Macau to Hong Kong and nearby cities: the Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, which is strategically located near the city centre. Additionally, the Taipa Ferry Terminal is the gateway to Cotai casinos and Macau International Airport, including high-speed ferries. A third, the Inner Harbour Terminal, however, remains largely inactive for major passenger routes.

Macau International Airport currently operates a single integrated passenger terminal for international flights. Traffic figures show steady growth. In January 2025, the Macau International Co. Ltd. recorded 676,235 passengers, up from 587,296 in January 2024—a 13.1 percent year-on-year increase.
