Kangwon Land, the operator of South Korea’s only casino open to local patrons, has begun a pilot operation of a “Casino Zone for Foreigners Only,” a move that aims to provide foreign tourists with enhanced access to the resort’s gaming facilities.
According to a report by the Maeil Business Newspaper, a South Korean media, the announcement came after the company received permission in September 2024 to revise its casino business restrictions. The new foreigner-only gaming zone will initially feature a raised betting limit, increasing from KRW100,000 to KRW20 million (€67 to €13,320). This change is designed to make the casino more appealing and accessible to international visitors.
In the long term, Kangwon Land plans to increase the betting limit even further, with plans to raise it to KRW300 million (€199,800) when the zone becomes fully operational. This adjustment follows a larger plan to transform the resort into a more international, visitor-friendly destination.
Acting CEO Choi Chul-kyu highlighted the strategic importance of the new gaming zone, noting that the initiative aims to enhance the experience for foreign tourists. Additionally, the casino will staff employees proficient in foreign languages to ensure seamless communication with international patrons. This focus on foreigner-friendly service is part of Kangwon Land’s broader strategy to expand its global reach.
Kangwon Land has committed to a €123 million investment to develop a second casino site as part of a broader investment in its gaming facilities. The expansion will increase the casino floor area to 20,260 square meters, adding 250 tables and 1,610 machine units.
These investments are designed to accommodate the growing demand from foreign tourists and enhance the resort’s overall appeal. Kangwon Land reported nearly 24,300 foreign visitors to its casino last year, a 5.8 percent increase compared to the previous year, underscoring the potential for further growth in the foreign market.
Kangwon Land also outlined its commitment to supporting the local economy. Choi added that the company will continue to expand the number of foreign visitors this year to enhance its status as a global complex resort and contribute to revitalising the national tourism industry and the economy of abandoned mines.
Last week, news Kangwon Land reported a 33.6 percent jump in net income for 2024. This revenue increase amounts to KRW455.38 billion ($316 million). The growth was attributed to a boost in non-operating income during the year.
