Features of the Greek gambling market
Over the years, the Greek gambling market has experienced ups and downs, with online gambling experiencing negative impacts to a greater extent than other areas. Since Law No. 3037/2002 introduced a ban on all online gambling, online operators have operated in what can only be described as a gray market. Land-based casinos and sportsbooks, on the other hand, are still open for business and thriving.
The Greek Organization of Football Prognosticators (OPAP) exercised exclusive control over sports betting, land-based slot machines and the national lottery through Laws 2206/1996 and 3139/2003, which limited gambling to nine licensed land-based casinos. The legalization of online gambling in Greece took place only in 2011, and now OPAP completely dominates this market segment. Even though this monopoly was declared illegal by the European Court, the company continues to lead the market.
