The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has announced its support for Keir Starmer 's Labour Party following its landslide victory in the general election on 4 July.
The BGC is optimistic about Starmer’s plans to develop the UK betting and gambling industry. Before the election, the new government committed to working closely with the industry to raise responsible gambling standards, aiming to strengthen its members’ position as leaders in the betting and gambling sector.
In response to the publication of the White Paper, significant legislative changes have been made to the UK’s regulated betting and gaming sector in 2023. The BGC has publicly stated its commitment to implementing the evidence-based and fair recommendations set out in the White Paper to raise industry standards and create a regulatory framework that promotes economic growth.
The UK betting and gambling industry makes a significant contribution to the economy, supporting 110,000 jobs and generating £4.2bn (€4.9bn) in tax revenue. It also contributes £7.1bn (€8.3bn) to the economy. BGC members also play a key role in funding sports such as the English Football League, horse racing, snooker, darts and rugby league.
“The BGC has long viewed the Labour Party as a potential government, working closely with shadow ministers in recent years on behalf of our members and their millions of customers,” said Michael Dougher, chairman of the Betting and Gaming Council.
