Bulgarian National Television has defended airing gambling-related clips during FIFA World Cup coverage, saying they do not breach national gambling advertising laws.
Key Points
The broadcaster said the law bans adverts that directly encourage gambling but does not restrict commercial activity by licensed operators
Licensed gambling operators are permitted to sponsor sports-related events, and some of the broadcast content falls under these arrangements
The Bulgarian National Television (BNT) has defended its broadcasting of gambling-related clips during FIFA World Cup coverage, stating that the materials do not constitute illegal gambling advertising under national law.
The statement comes amid increased local media and public scrutiny of gambling-related content aired during the tournament.
BNT noted that the law prohibits gambling advertising that “directly invites consumers to participate in gambling activities” (legal definition), but does not restrict the economic activity of gambling operators.
BNT also cited opinions from the National Revenue Agency (NRA), which it said support its interpretation of the legislation.
According to these opinions, certain communications from gambling operators, such as announcements of betting shop openings, are considered “offers for economic cooperation” rather than inducements to gamble.
During the World Cup, BNT also broadcasts clips for the Bulgarian Football Union’s Efbet League and Mr Bit Second League. The broadcaster argued that the content in question reflects commercial partnerships rather than direct encouragement to gamble.
Gambling operators licensed under the Gambling Act are permitted to sponsor events that support sport, culture, healthcare, education and social initiatives, provided legal restrictions are respected.
The broadcaster also airs content for Betano in its role as an official World Cup sponsor and FIFA contractual partner.
Meanwhile, the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) has announced it is monitoring broadcasts of World Cup matches on BNT. The media regulator confirmed the monitoring is taking place due to increased public sensitivity around gambling advertising during the matches.
