Angola expands market campaign against illegal gambling

Angola’s Institute of Game Supervision (ISJ) has stepped up its efforts to tackle illegal gambling by launching a public awareness campaign at two of Viana’s busiest markets. Working in partnership with the Municipal Administration of Viana, the regulator engaged with traders, vendors and shoppers at the Regedoria and Luanda Sul Markets to explain the legal risks associated with unauthorised gambling activities and promote the use of licensed gaming services.

The program is a component of the ISJ’s larger effort to improve oversight and inspection in Angola’s gaming industry. In addition to enforcing regulations, the institution is working to raise public understanding of gaming rules and promote more community compliance.

Regulator brings awareness directly to the public

The campaign was led by ISJ Deputy General Director Cláudio Paulo, with support from Afonso da Silva, Head of the Supervision and Inspection Department. Instead of limiting its work to inspections, the regulator took its message directly to public spaces where large numbers of people gather each day.

Officials met with merchants and customers throughout the markets, providing information about illegal gambling, the responsibilities set out under Angola’s gaming laws and the potential legal consequences for individuals involved in unauthorised gaming activities. The discussions also gave members of the public an opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance from ISJ representatives.

According to the regulator, engaging directly with local communities is an important part of preventing illegal gambling before enforcement action becomes necessary.

Educational material supports prevention efforts

As part of the campaign, the ISJ distributed educational materials including flyers, posters and roll up banners. These resources contained information about responsible gaming, the dangers linked to illegal gambling and the importance of using authorised operators.

The regulator used simple messages to explain how illegal gambling can operate outside the country’s legal framework and why regulated gaming activities are subject to government oversight. By making this information available in busy public markets, the ISJ aimed to reach a broad audience that included both regular market visitors and local business owners.

The educational campaign complements the institute’s inspection activities by increasing public understanding of the legal requirements that govern gambling in Angola.

Campaign supports wider regulatory goals

One component of the ISJ’s larger plan to improve regulation of the nation’s gaming sector is the market outreach initiative. The institute is still committed to enhancing oversight while promoting a gaming environment that complies with the law.

According to the ISJ, the campaign also contributes to several wider objectives, including protecting vulnerable groups from the risks associated with unregulated gambling, safeguarding public health and maintaining confidence in the regulated gaming sector.

The regulator believes that greater awareness of the law can help reduce illegal gambling activities while encouraging citizens to choose authorised gaming services.

More initiatives planned across Angola

Following the awareness activities in Viana, the ISJ confirmed that it will continue expanding similar campaigns in other parts of Angola. The institute plans to increase education, prevention and inspection activities as part of its nationwide strategy to combat illegal gambling.
