The Danish Gambling Authority has secured a court order to block Polymarket and 98 other illegal gambling websites in Denmark.

The action follows the country’s standard procedure for blocking unlicensed gambling sites, with the Frederiksberg court ruling in favour of the regulator and ordering Danish internet service providers to restrict access.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Taxation and Growth issued strong criticism against Polymarket, where users can bet on war and similar serious events.

Engel-Schmidt stated: "I am genuinely outraged that you can turn human tragedies into a business model. We are talking about people who lose their lives.’’

The blocking is carried out through DNS restrictions, preventing customers of Danish internet providers from accessing the blocked websites. Instead, users are redirected to an information page explaining that the site is illegal.

Commenting on the overall blocking of unlicensed operators, Engel-Schmidt added: “If you want to operate in the Danish market, you must also play by local rules. You cannot target Danish consumers and profit from Danes while believing that Danish rules do not apply to you. That is neither fair nor sustainable. We must have a market where the rules apply to everyone.”

Polymarket and other prediction markets face extensive regulatory scrutiny in Europe. Other countries that have either blocked or restricted Polymarket include Germany, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Romania, Switzerland, Poland, the Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. 

Criticism of prediction markets stretches beyond Europe. In the US, numerous states are trying to block such operators, arguing that they are not compliant with state regulations, with many legal cases currently underway.
