NBA games to boost Sands China’s market presence, Citigroup says

The NBA is set to return to Macau in October 2025, bringing two pre-season games featuring the Brooklyn Nets and the Phoenix Suns to The Venetian Arena. This marks the league’s first return to the region since 2007 and symbolises efforts to restore its relationship with China after years of strained ties. The games, scheduled for 10 and 12 October, are expected to attract considerable attention and strengthen the NBA’s fan engagement across Asia.

Sands China’s advantage with The Venetian Arena

Sands China is poised to benefit from hosting the pre-season games, with Citigroup analyst George Choi predicting an increase in visitation and market share. The recently renovated Venetian Arena, which features upgraded VIP amenities, new décor, and state-of-the-art acoustics, positions Sands as a premier venue for high-profile events.

The success of a recent NBA Legends game, featuring stars such as Tony Parker and Ray Allen, demonstrated the venue’s ability to draw crowds beyond concerts and traditional events. The arena’s enhancements, including reduced seating capacity for a more exclusive experience, are expected to appeal to premium visitors.

“Bringing preseason games to Macau will showcase the excitement of the NBA to fans in one of the world’s emerging hubs for sports,” Mark Tatum, NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer, said in a statement. “The Nets and the Suns feature an exciting mix of established and rising stars, and we look forward to engaging fans, aspiring players and the local community in Macau through these games and various interactive events, youth development programs and social impact initiatives.”

Strengthening the NBA-China relationship

The NBA’s return to Macau is seen as a step towards rebuilding ties with China, a critical market for the league. Relations were strained in 2019 following a controversial social media post by a Houston Rockets executive supporting Hong Kong protests. The fallout led to the cancellation of broadcasts and a downturn in NBA-China engagement.

The partnership with Sands China not only brings basketball back to Macau but also includes youth development and community programmes aimed at fostering a love for the sport. These initiatives signal a renewed commitment to reconnect with fans in the region while promoting basketball’s values.

Multi-year agreement with Sands China

The NBA has entered a multi-year agreement with Sands China to host two pre-season games annually over the next five years. The deal aligns with Macau’s push to diversify its economy by showcasing the city as a hub for sports, entertainment, and tourism.

According to Sands China’s CEO, this collaboration enhances Macau’s profile as a global destination that combines hospitality, entertainment, and sports. With basketball’s widespread appeal and Macau’s reputation as a vibrant destination, the partnership is expected to generate excitement and further solidify Macau’s standing on the international stage.

“We are thrilled to be bringing The NBA China Games to Macao and to create opportunities for basketball fans from around the world to celebrate the best of sports,” Grant Chum, SCL President and Chief Executive Officer, said.

Renewed momentum for NBA in Asia

The NBA’s return to Macau not only rekindles its presence in China but also underscores its global ambitions. The pre-season games featuring popular teams like the Nets and Suns promise to captivate audiences and strengthen the league’s reach in Asia.

As Macau leverages its sports culture to complement its gaming industry, the collaboration with the NBA marks an important moment in its efforts to diversify and attract a broader audience.
