Philippines’ DigiPlus aims to launch sports betting in Brazil by year-end

DigiPlus Interactive Corp., a Philippine-based gaming technology firm, is preparing to launch its gaming operations in Brazil, initially focusing on sports betting. In a media briefing, the company said it expects to go live by the end of the year, aiming to tap into Brazil’s strong enthusiasm for football.

Speaking to local media, DigiPlus Chairman Eusebio Tanco highlighted the importance of testing the market before expanding further, recognising Brazil’s potential as one of the fastest-growing gaming markets in Latin America.

Search for a local partner

While DigiPlus has allocated PHP660 million (€11.4 million) to fund its operations in Brazil, the company is actively searching for a local partner. Tanco emphasised that the partnership is not for financial support but for strategic collaboration. To facilitate this, DigiPlus has engaged a Brazilian investment bank to identify potential partners. The company has also established a local team of ten members since last year to assist with securing the necessary regulatory approvals.

Securing a gaming licence

DigiPlus recently obtained a gaming licence from Brazil’s Ministry of Finance’s Secretariat of Awards and Bets. This allows the company to operate land-based and online sports betting, electronic games, live game studios and fixed-odds betting activities. Brazil has recently opened its gaming sector to new entrants, with only a few companies receiving licences. DigiPlus was among those approved, positioning itself to compete in the newly regulated market.

Gaming firms entering the Brazilian market had to go through a four-phase review which includes verifying strong IT security measures to safeguard user data, enabling secure and efficient payment processing, enforcing AML/CTF regulations to combat financial crimes, and promoting responsible gambling through ethical safeguards.

Leveraging ArenaPlus for expansion

DigiPlus plans to use its ArenaPlus platform for online sports betting in Brazil. The company aims to replicate its success in the Philippines by offering a familiar and engaging betting experience. Given Brazil’s large population and the projected growth of its gaming industry, from $2 billion in 2023 to an estimated $4 billion by 2029, DigiPlus sees an opportunity for long-term expansion in the country.

Last week, the company shared that it had seen its active user base nearly double by December 2024, reaching 40 million, with growth momentum continuing. Tanco attributed this expansion to recent regulatory adjustments in Manila. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) lowered the fee for electronic gaming operators to 30 percent of gross gaming revenue, a change expected to support DigiPlus’ growth further.
