Elena de Senna Fernandez, head of the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), predicts a significant increase in the number of tourists to Macau during the upcoming Labor Day holiday. The city is expected to see an average of 130,000 visitors per day, surpassing the peaks of previous holidays such as Cheng Ming and Easter.
Fernandez emphasizes that this year the Labor Day holiday in mainland China will last five days, from May 1 to May 5. The extended holiday is expected to attract more tourists from mainland China to Macau, helping to revive the city's tourism industry.
With Chief Executive Officer Ho Yat Sen's announcement of upcoming policies on multiple-entry visas between Macau and Hengqin for tour groups from mainland China, Fernandez expresses the industry's hope for these measures. The implementation of such initiatives is expected to revitalize tour groups from the mainland, boosting business opportunities for Macau tour guides and travel agencies.
Fernandez emphasized that many guides in Macau have used the pandemic period to improve their skills through various educational programs, which allowed them to become eligible to work in Hengqing. She expressed hope that the new multiple-entry visa policy will allow Macau tour guides to expand their professional horizons and contribute to the creation of new jobs in both regions.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Fernandez remains optimistic about the future of international tourism in Macau. She is confident that the annual target of two million international tourists will not only be met, but exceeded, thanks to the encouraging first quarter data.
