DraftKings highlights Illinois tax hike in PAC statement

The sports betting and DFS giant this week filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to create a corporate PAC.

This, the business said, was intended to support state and federal candidates and organisations which have shown “an interest in issues affecting our business”.

Responding to a NEXT.io request for comment, a DraftKings spokesperson said: “We have established this PAC to support state and federal candidates and organisations who have shown an interest in issues affecting our business.

“DraftKings’ ultimate goal is to build the best, most trusted, and most customer-centric destination for our players. The recent tax increase in Illinois makes it harder to provide the best service to our players while it simultaneously incentivises more players to wager in the unregulated, illegal market.

“Among other things, we are monitoring a range of regulatory, tax, and licensing policies around the country, including the recent tax increase in Illinois. In addition, DraftKings may prioritise issues that impact business operations, including the expansion of the legal, regulated online betting market.”

The business added that, as a technology company operating in a dynamic and highly regulated sector, it is committed to constructive engagement with policymakers at both the state and federal level.

Additionally, it emphasised the DraftKings PAC will operate in full compliance with all applicable federal and state campaign finance laws and reporting requirements.

The founding of the PAC comes as DraftKings faces an array of new regulatory and legislative threats across the US, including state tax rises, a slowdown in legal iGaming and sports betting expansion, and the possibility of damaging federal legislation.
